The Eleusinian Mysteries were among the most sacred and secret religious rites of Ancient Greece, held annually in Eleusis, near Athens. Dedicated to the goddesses Demeter and Persephone, they symbolized the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth — themes central to ancient Greek spirituality and agriculture. Although the exact details were kept secret — as initiates could be executed for revealing them — ancient sources allow us to outline the main stages of the rites. The Lesser Mysteries, which served as preparatory rites, were held several months earlier, while the Greater Mysteries, the main festival at Eleusis, lasted for nine days and included the following symbolic acts and sacred processions: Proclamation Day, Purification, Procession to Eleusis, Sacred Rites at Eleusis, Sacred Night and Vision, and Conclusion and Celebration.
